Microdermabrasion...what
is it?
Microdermabrasion is one of the newest pieces of ammunition
in the anti ageing arsenal that makes skin care sound like warfare
( Botox, acid washes, erbium lasers). While microdermabrasion- also
known as Power Peel, Diamond Peel, Smart Peel and a slew of other
trademarks -debuted in the United States less than six years ago,
many dermatologists,
plastic surgeons, and aestheticians now favor it over laser and
strong acid peels. It's safer, they say, less extreme, and has zero
down time. Plus, it's
exploding with innovations- from combining it with skin care to
new souped up machines.
Microderm deeply exfoliates the stratum corneum, the skins
top layer, by spitting minuscule aluminum-oxide particles at the
face or body and then sucking up the debris. The
process helps to diminish acne scars, and evidence of sun damage
(fine lines, irregular pigmentation). It evolved from its
more invasive -even brutal- European grandparent dermabrasion, which
cut away the outer layer of skin with a rotating wire brush and
had greater risks and longer healing times.
It may still sound painful, but the bark is worse than the
bite. After a one hour treatment
session (about $150) which also includes extractions
and a hydrating masque, the skin is substantially smoother and maintains
a warmth to the touch, a rosy glow for days ( a regular facial doesn't
hold and aromatherapy candle to this). "It's gradual. More
serious changes happen after four to
six sessions,"
But what makes changes happen? "Taking off the
top layer incites inflammation, which helps to remodel collagen,"
says David Amron M.D., a Beverly Hills dermatologist. When the epidermis
is sanded down, it grows back thicker- which is a good thing. Since
skin thins as it ages. " As
a single treatment, microderm will freshen the epidermis,"
Amron says. "With a series, however, it will penetrate the
epidermis and can actually reduce lines."
When added with glycolic acid, you
get a great treatment.
The hottest area of exploration is advances in the machinery
of sand blasting. Savvy manufacturers have figured our how to lessen
irritation, treat awkward areas, and intensify results by partnering
abrasion with skin care (which according to researchers, is a major
breakthrough). Also, microderm greatly affects skin's permeability
meaning the skin will absorb much more quickly..
Other doctors suggest that,
if done consistently, microderm could feasibly thwart the aging
process before it begins because, the theory goes, skin may
never actually have a chance to thin or loose collagen. "
I believe that combining microderm with skin care as part of a long
term regime will give patients younger looking skin," says
Dr. McDaniel.
Is there a catch? Not as
far as we know. Microdermabrasion has been classified by the FDA
as class 1, which means it's the lowest level of safety concern,
and, doctors say, the procedure is very precise.
( It can only be as precise, however, of the hand that moves it.
Training is the key.)
But there's always a possibility of complications such as
herpes breakouts ( in those carrying the virus) or allergic reactions
to products used possession. Unfortunately, there are no published
peer reviews on the effects of microderm yet, so it may be several
years before we know for sure whether or not microderm is the ultimate
wrinkle-fighting machine.'
